Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.
Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships this year.
Athletes will gain the ability to contest specific rulings made by the official, mirroring the system currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This development arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the longstanding role of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other situations, including:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.
A Recent Example
A recent case took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Further Updates
A further change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was in or out.
Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
