Christantus Uche Sparks Dominant Palace Triumph at Shelbourne.
Despite entering their first-ever European adventure, Crystal Palace are learning at a rapid pace. Missing star figures like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles departed Dublin with a comfortable win that all but secures them a spot in the Conference League playoffs.
A further three points in their upcoming match against Finnish KuPS should be sufficient to seal straight entry to the last 16, especially after a prior setback against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Grasp the Opportunity
This match offered a platform for some of Palace's lesser-used talent to impress. Christantus Uche, making only his second start since joining on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a well-taken goal. Striker Eddie Nketiah added a second, finding the net for the second game in match.
The Shelbourne team that had concluded their domestic season were outmatched even for a largely rotated Palace lineup. The visitors were further weakened by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with leg problems.
Dominance Established from the Start
Despite torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly took control. A slick passing sequence in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, let Nketiah to lay on Uche for a straightforward tap-in.
Youngster Adam Wharton came close soon after, driving a long-range shot over the bar. Nketiah subsequently claimed for a penalty after bursting into the area, but the official waved away the appeals.
The formerArsenal man didn't need to wait long to get his goal, prodding home from a yard out after Uche's effort had hit the post.
The home side were hanging on desperately. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to escape a booking for two robust challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the crossbar with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Contest
The match was as good as over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of comically weak challenges before calmly dispatching a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
After the break, coach Oliver Glasner took the chance to withdraw several players like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse came close to scoring his first touch, but saw his shot blocked.
The youngster was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt crash off each posts before being clasped on the line. Uche then missed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still room for development in his game.
A solitary worry for Palace was a second-half knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This paved the way for 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to earn his senior debut, capping an otherwise perfect evening for the traveling side.
