A bettor made nearly half a million dollars by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro immediately preceding it was officially announced, sparking debate about potential gains made from non-public details of American actions.

Changing Odds in Predictions

Wagers on Polymarket, a blockchain-based service, that the leader would be removed from office by the end of January increased in the hours before former President Trump declared on January 3rd that the president had been taken into custody.

A particular user, which became a member last month and took four positions, all on political events in Venezuela, earned over $nearly half a million from a starting bet of over $32,000.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Market Signals Before News Break

Platform data shows that users assessed the probability of a political change at just under 7% in the late afternoon of the prior Friday.

But these probabilities had climbed to eleven percent by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the early hours of January 3rd, indicating a sudden change in positions immediately prior to the official statement was made.

"This specific wager has all the hallmarks of a bet based on non-public details," commented an industry expert.

A small number of other individuals also made large payouts from predicting the capture.

Political Attention Emerges

Politicians are beginning to pay attention.

Proposed legislation introduced on the start of the week aims to prohibit federal workers from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a bet.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Event-driven betting sites have grown significantly in recent years, with traders able to predict everything from sports outcomes to political events.

Prediction markets encountered regulatory challenges under the Biden administration. Yet it has found a more favorable environment during the Trump presidency.

Trading on insider information is a crime in the securities markets, but there are less oversight in the prediction market arena.

A spokesperson for a competing service said their site "explicitly prohibits trading on insider information of any form."
